Boston is commonly known as America's "walking city", and the name is apt. Most of the city proper fits into a compact geographical area about five miles long from east to west ( 7 km ) and three miles long from north to south ( 4 km). A great many attractions are found in this area, from shopping in fashionable boutiques on Newbury St. to the Italian neighborhood on Hanover St. in the north end. Much of the city's business is conducted in the financial district, whose heart is State St. and Congress St. (incidentally the corner of the "new" city hall).
